The right way to shoot a "john woo railing" scene

One thing that bugs me the most when I watch some of the entries is when they do a "john woo railing scene." They make it look so awkward and weird...

Ok if you notice the biggest difference from others is the position of the main character's body on the rail. The original idea from the movie I believe is he was positioned on the rail to draw the fire of the bad guys away from the innocent civilians. Now his upper half of the body is completely away from the staircase. On the examples from the competition the body is usually parallel to the rail instead of perpendicular.
